Golf was born on the coast of Scotland, where wind, sand, wild grasses and hillocks created by burrowing animals coalesced to create a multifaceted template for the game. You won't find the heather, gorse and thick burrs of the Old Country in North Carolina, but you will find landscapes galore for a quality golf experience along its coastal region.
The Outer Banks features Rees Jones' beautiful and challenging Currituck Club and the Scottish-style links designs at Sea Scape Golf Links and Nags Head Golf Links. The Brunswick County area in the southeast corner of the state is a mecca for outstanding golf, from inexpensive public courses to high-end, semiprivate facilities. Among the jewels are designer Tim Cate's "Big Cat" family of four courses (with a fifth on the way) at Ocean Ridge Plantation at Sunset Beach.
And Bald Head Island, accessible only by ferry from Southport, sports a George Cobb-designed course. Afterward, you can walk the beach or stroll through a maritime forest dense with live oaks, dogwoods, palms, cedars and an abundance of other vegetation.
