Need a little help deciding where to go to play North Carolina's top-rated golf courses? Just ask those in the know.
Tom Fazio has designed more than a dozen courses in the Tar Heel State, not surprising given that he moved his home and office from south Florida to Western North Carolina in 1987. "There's no easier place to design golf courses than North Carolina," says Fazio. "In other areas of the country, you have to create features. In North Carolina, they come naturally."
Which is why the state has so many courses ranked among the best in the nation, many of them open to the traveling golfer. Pinehurst No. 2 is perennially a top 20 course in the nation and currently sits 19th in Golf Digest's "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses 2007-2008." It is third in the magazine's ranking of Best Public Courses, and Donald Ross's tour de force is the top-ranked course in the state as chosen by the North Carolina Golf Panel.
There are so many top-notch courses here to choose from, but we'll start with a few dozen that have received one of the game's loftiest accolades. All courses included here have received a 4 1/2 or 5-star rating on Golf Digest's prestigious "Best Places to Play" list.
